James H. Carter is a lawyer and international arbitrator, formerly Senior Counsel at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and previously a litigation partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP for 33 years. He has served as counsel in commercial and investment disputes involving projects and joint ventures around the world and has served as arbitrator in more than 150 international cases. He is a former Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Arbitration Association, former President of the American Society of International Law and former member of the London Court of International Arbitration. He also has served on the boards of the American Bar Foundation and Freedom House, an international democracy and human rights organisation, and as Chair of the Board of the New York International Arbitration Centre. Mr. Carter is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School and studied history at the University of Cambridge as a Fulbright Scholar. He is the editor of two books on international arbitration (both now in multiple editions) and the author of more than 50 articles. Mr. Carter also is a sports arbitrator, having served on behalf of the National Football League and the NFL Players Association in disciplinary disputes involving doping allegations against NFL players and as a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, which hears disputes involving Olympic-level athletes and sports organizations.
